Vous avez manqué l’exposition qui lui était consacrée au Grand Palais en 2017. C’est regrettable ! Vous n’êtes pas non plus allé à Berlin. Pensez-vous aller à San Diego ? Irving Penn (1917-2009), l’un des plus grands photographes du XXe siècle ! Et certainement, le plus européen des photographes américains. Célèbre pour ses photographies de personnalités telles que Pablo Picasso, Yves Saint Laurent, Audrey Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock… mais aussi d’inconnus, ses photos de mode notamment pour le Vogue (cent soixante-cinq couvertures en cinquante ans, la première le 1er octobre 1943), ses natures mortes, scènes de rue… Soixante-dix ans d’une carrière marquée par l’éclectisme mais aussi par une esthétique épurée et une attention méticuleuse à la composition de la photographie. Un soin quasi obsessionnel qui se prolonge jusqu’au tirage auquel il accorde un soin méticuleux. En partenariat avec le Metropolitan Museum of Art et la Fondation Irving Penn.

Publié à l’occasion de l’exposition au Grand Palais, cet OUVRAGE indispensable réunit l’une des plus grandes sélections à ce jour de photographies d’Irving Penn : près de trois cents au total. Certaines sont célèbres et même iconiques, comme les fameuses séries : cigarettes, clichés ethnographiques alors que d’autres sont publiées ici pour la première fois.
